Α)Report: Syrian AQ offshoot more dangerous than ISIS
Kind of an interesting (if wonkish) report out of the Institute for the Study of War was mentioned in a CNN article the other day:
Al Qaeda’s Syrian affiliate, Jabhat al-Nusra, is a greater threat to the United States in the long term than is ISIS, making the United States’ current single-minded focus on the latter group misguided, a new report is charging.
Al-Nusra is «much more dangerous to the U.S. than the ISIS model in the long run,» according to the authors of a report labeling both groups «existential» threats. The report was released last week by the Institute for the Study of War and American Enterprise Institute.
There are so many groups now that it’s virtually impossible to even keep track of the sides. We’ve got Russia and Syria teamed up to combat ISIS with Iran, and us and Iraq aiding that initiative in so far as it doesn’t help Syria, which we called for regime change in. Meanwhile ISIS has migrated into Afghanistan, and is fighting against the Taliban there, which at least makes sense from the Shi’ite/Sunni angle. But now AQ is apparently trying to make a comeback.
Though for now al-Nusra hasn’t undertaken attacks in the West like ISIS has, [Former Petreaus protege Kim] Kagan said it’s just as potent.
«While ISIS is flashier … both represent an existential threat, both wish to attack the homeland, both seek the mobilization of Muslim communities against the West,» she said.
In fact, Kagan warned that al Qaeda’s Syrian branch represented a longer-term and more intractable threat than ISIS and that targeting al-Nusra would be more difficult than targeting the other group, both of which take advantage of the chaos of the Syrian civil war to expand their reach.
«Al-Nusra is quietly intertwining itself with the Syrian population and Syrian opposition. … They are waiting in the wings to pick up the mantle of global jihad once ISIS falls,» she said.
The longer report is interesting if you can keep everyone straight, but came to these conclusions in the summary:
-
Salafi-jihadi military organizations, particularly ISIS and al Qaeda, are the greatest threat to the security and values of American and European citizens. ISIS and al Qaeda pose an existential threat because they accelerate the collapse of world order, provoke domestic and global trends that endanger American values and way of life, and plan direct attacks against the U.S. and its partners.
-
Syrian al Qaeda affiliate Jabhat al Nusra poses one of the most significant long-term threats of any Salafi-jihadi group. This al Qaeda affiliate has established an expansive network of partnerships with local oppositions groups that have grown either dependent on or fiercely loyal to the organization. Its defeat and destruction must be one of the highest priorities of any strategy to defend the United States and Europe from al Qaeda attacks.
-
ISIS and al Qaeda are more than terrorist groups; they are insurgencies. They use terrorism as a tactic, but these organizations are insurgencies that aim first to overthrow all existing governments in the Muslim world and replace them with their own, and later, to attack the West from a position of power to spread their ideology to all of humanity. Separating the elements of ISIS and al Qaeda that are actively working to attack the West from the main bodies of those groups fighting in the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia is impossible. All al Qaeda groups and ISIS affiliates seek to take the war into the West to fulfill their grand strategic objective of establishing a global caliphate, albeit according to different timelines.
Again, reading through it might be a bit of a slog, but the main point is that even in defeating ISIS, we won’t be in the clear with all these other groups waiting in the wings.
Mwanwhile, allegedly Generals are urging boots on ground:
Top U.S. generals have told President Barack Obama that if the fight against ISIS is to succeed in Iraq, they will need U.S. boots on the ground. The president has so far sent 1,600 ground troops to the Middle Eastern country to assist the Iraqi military in trying to stop the terrorist group, but military leaders in the Pentagon have steadily increased their call for more as the situation on the ground becomes more desperate.
“Our military commanders … have all laid out scenarios where we need more troops,” said House Armed Services Committee Chairman Rep. Buck McKeon, R-Calif. “If we don’t put boots on the ground, we can’t form the coalition, we can’t retake ground that needs to be taken and held.»
I don’t know what constitutes «boots on ground» anymore since we lost a guy over there and people were saying we didn’t have any boots on ground, but either way, in my humble opinion grab every guy in the military with a beard, ask them if they want to go, and let them have at it. That’s green berets, SEALs, JTACs, PJs etc. Let the Pesh do the actual fighting, and fill the skies with the A10’s. We keep being told no one wants the A10, so let’s give it a retirement celebration.
